Calexico East Port of Entry Bridge Widening
Client| Imperial County Transportation Commission
2022 - Present | $44 Million
The Imperial County Transportation Commission (ICTC), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) along with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) are proposing to widen the existing Calexico East Port of Entry Bridge over the All-American Canal near the U.S./Mexico border to improve access to the existing inspection booths. The project proposes to widen the existing structure over the All-American Canal near the U.S./Mexico border approximately 0.7 miles South of State Route 7 (SR 7). The project will add four northbound lanes: two commercial vehicle lanes and two passenger vehicle lanes. The existing northbound pedestrian walkway will be shifted to the west to facilitate the addition of the two new northbound passenger vehicle lanes.
ZTC was responsible for source inspection and verification of bridge components, including bearing pads, structural fasteners, steel piles fabrication, and steel plate girders fabrication. Steel girders were fabricated at Utah Pacific Bridge and Steel, Lindon, UT. ZTC staff performed prefabrication verification such as steel shop drawing review, WPS/PQR verification/witnessing, WQCP review, and pre-weld meeting. During the steel girder fabrication, ZTC QA steel inspectors verified bridge fabrication from material procurement verification, check test sampling, MOH Verification, QA hold point inspection for structural steel welding and NDT Verification of welds including Ultra Sonic testing, Magnetic Particle testing, and Radiography Film review of the welds. In addition to steel girder fabrication, ZTC performed coating inspection of steel girders at the fabricator, which included submittal review, PQWP review, pre-paint meeting, shop blast verification, paint application verification, and final paint verification. After shop steel fabrication and coating was completed, ZTC staff witnessed shop assembly and released the steel girder bridge to the jobsite. Additionally, ZTC supported CM team with field welding and bolting verification of the steel girders during the erection process. ZTC is going to complete its scope of work on this project by performing field coating verification in Spring of 2023.
